According to Brett Johnston, author of Close Kids, "Almost all sibling problems are rooted in one thing. That one thing is selfishness. Greed, jealousy, needing attention, and inability to understand others all have roots in being selfish. "I want it my way and no one else matters."
1. What are the signs of Sibling rivalry? These are usually obvious. They include fighting (actual fist fighting), arguing, name-calling, teasing, non-cooperation and the like. At times it is more subtle and can be the act of excluding a sibling or harassing that sister or brother when parents are not around.

A survey on "Kids and Careers" was done by Junior Achievement and ING, a financial institution. While some might interpret the findings in an overwhelmingly positive way, I was less optimistic about the results.

I imagine every parent's heart sank when they heard the news that criminal charges were being brought against 9 teenagers related to the death of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince. Prince took her life. She was the victim of excessive bullying. Experts estimate that about half of all children are bullied at some point during their school years. Close to one in ten children are bullied repeatedly.
- What does bullying look like?
- What are possible signs that your child is being bullied?
- If you discover that your child is being bullied, what can you do
- What are the signs that your child might be bullying others?
- Has your child ever been bullied? How did you find out and what did you do about it?
These are the questions I'll be talking about tomorrow morning on WMBI Chicago radio, 90.1 FM with Mark Elfstrand (Tune in at 6:35 a.m. Thursday). |
