Connecting with Your Teenager

While 73 percent of parents assume they are connecting with their teenage children, only 45 percent of high school girls agree that their parents know what's really going on in their lives. So...how can parents improve that connection?

1.     Is there a key to connecting with teenagers?

  • If I had to limit myself to one answer, it would be listening.
  • Family household conversations have decreased dramatically in the last decade.

Teenagers and Relationship Abuse

What do parent need to know? A study conducted at Harvard School of Public Health indicated that 1 in 5 high school girls has been a victim of dating abuse.  It is a serious issue that parents need to be aware of.

1.     What important question do parents need to ask if they are having difficulty with the idea of children entertaining themselves?

  • Parents need to ask the question, am I involved in entertaining my children because they need me, or is it because I need them.

2.     How different does this look at different ages?

  • Babies -- Give then small intervals of independent time, allowing your child to choose from several age appropriate toys.
  • Toddlers -- This is when the imagination is developing.  Help your child begin the play process. Stay connected but allow independent play.
  • Preschoolers -- Kids this age are capable of abstract imagination.  Be available while they play, but do not dominate.
